Star Wars: The Force Awakens pays homage to many classic shots and plot points, but never seems to be bogged down by it. Remember, Vader’s identity wasn’t revealed to be Anakin Skywalker until Empire Strikes Back. Knowing that the previous 6 Star Wars movies focused on the Skywalker family, I was fairly certain before the movie that at least one of the new characters would be the next generation of the Skywalker family (through Luke or Leia). While some revelations were made in The Force Awakens, I am fairly certain that there are some remaining reveals that are waiting for future movies. Starting the movie, you don’t know where the story will end, you don’t know which new characters connect to the old characters.
In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the suspense returns along with some familiar heroes (Han, Leia, Luke, and Chewbacca). It also meant that they had the delicate balance of making Anakin likable as the hero of the movies while showing his journey to the dark side. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was everything that a Star Wars movie should be (and that the prequel movies were not). Part of the issue with the prequel series was that you knew where the story was going…Anakin would become Darth Vader, would fall in love with Padme and have twins, all the Jedi would be killed except Yoda & Obi-Wan. I was careful to avoid spoilers before seeing the movie which is why we wanted to see it opening day. I will be very careful not to reveal any plot-points beyond what have already been seen in trailers. My family went to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens after school on Friday. We all loved the movie and I have a feeling we will see it a second time over break.
